My heart is always conflicted at seeing animals behind bars.

Dora the other explorer! 2year old female seeks family for long walks on beach and night times spent snuggling on the sofa. N287
In the North Shelter of the San Diego County Department of Animal Services, I feel a little bit better about it. I know they are in the safest place they could be until they find their "forever home". I know they are coddled and snuggled by countless, dedicated and loving volunteers. I know they have a real shot at finding a great new home.

male terrier needs family to love him...stat! 3 years old N794
I am a frequent visitor to the shelter, which is right up the street from my home, however, I usually park the car, run a donation of towels or pet beds up to the super friendly and helpful front desk staff, and then leave before I catch a glimpse of someone I would feel bad about leaving behind.

Isaac will melt your heart. Male neutered, 1.5 yr old pit bull N822
Today I wanted to spotlight some of the adorable fur-kids they have available for adoption! I am going to pick an animal each week and give him or her their 15 minutes of fame! You never know who is looking and all of my pets, past and current have been adopted after someone else saw them and told me about their extreme cuteness and how they would be the perfect companion for me!

Meet Brenda! gorgeous brindle markings! Female, 3 years old. Pit Bull Boxer mix
The shelter is one of three, in the county of San Diego. I am going to stick with the North Shelter, as it is located in Carlsbad. There are shelters, though, all over the world that house animals who need a human to love them. If you are looking for an addition to your family, PLEASE check your local area shelter first! If you do not meet them on that visit, do not give up on them...they need you to come back and find them!

He's so FLUFFY! N862 male/neutered Golden 1 year
The
shelters are often at capacity but they have a great adoption rate. Just because a space in the kennels opens up, does not mean it needs to be filled right away. As responsible pet owners, we can do our part in keeping shelters empty. First, spay and neuter your pets. If you adopt an animal from a shelter, chances are your new buddy already has had this procedure. There are enough animals in this world, which leads me to the second item. Do not support puppy mills.
Animals are bred irresponsibly in puppy mills. Breeding in this style leads to animals with poor health, which could lead to animals being given up by their families and ending up in a shelter. Next, keep your pets Id tags current and microchip them if you can. If your pet gets out, it will be easier to tell where they belong and will help to keep them out of shelters. Another way to protect your pet is to make sure you have adequate fencing. If an animal escapes the yard, it can get picked up and taken to a local area shelter or worse, be involved in an accident.

Please keep in mind that these are merely suggestions as a way to keep shelters open for the animals that are in need, like the two sweet hearts below. Older animals with tons of personality and charm are just waiting to come home with you.

Aggie and her pal Mac, below, just lost both parents in an unfortunate turn of events. They are in need of a loving home. Their Shelter ID numbers are N893 and N384 respectively.
We love our pets like our children. We know they can heal our hearts. We know they make us better people just by being in their presence! Please know that the friend you have been looking for, the unconditional love giver, the pal you can talk to and spend time with, the
oh-my-gosh-could-he-be-any-cuter little partner is possibly waiting for you
